Erythrotypes

C Prints, enlarged from medium format color negative, which was exposed to the river water of the Rio Tinto and reacted chemically with it, 60 x 80 cm, mounted on aluminum, framed with museum glass, edition 3+1 AP, 2023.

The work cycle “Erythrotypes” is part of an engagement with the Rio Tinto in Andalusia. Metals have been mined on the banks of this river for five thousand years, hence the water is copper-colored, highly acidic and devoid of animal and plant life. I have worked with the river in a very direct and physical way, making it not only a pictorial object, but a cocreator in the image-making process. For the "Erythrotypes" (red prints), I exposed color negative films with images of the Rio Tinto to this acidic Anthropocene river in the dark, whereby the water provoked photochemical reactions. As a result, the river water altered the negatives and added pink and rust-colored textures to them during subsequent development.
