River Paintings, 2023

The work Red River approaches the Rio Tinto in Anda- lusia. Metals have been mined on the banks of this river for five thousand years, hence the water is copper-col- ored, highly acidic, and devoid of animal and plant life. I engaged the river in a very direct and physical way, making it not only a pictorial object, but a cocreator in the image-making process. For the „River Paintings“ I have placed canvases in the river at various locations, upon which a layer of copper pigments and pollutants has sedimented over the course of time.
