About

Michael Hirschbichler works on the threshold of art, architecture and anthropology. He engages with diverse spaces, landscapes and territories. Thereby he focuses on the interrelations between their material and immaterial aspects (stories, memories, histories), between the visible and the invisible, between the living and the dead, between past, present and future, between facts and fictions. With an approach that he calls “Dirty Work (Drecksarbeit)” or “Phantasmography”, he moves back and forth between research and its speculative transformation, between collecting traces and physical interventions. Employing a wide range of media – such as drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, building, photography and text – he aims to combine reason and fantasy to critically reflect on and engage with contemporary productions of space and ways of worldmaking.

Michael Hirschbichler studied architecture at ETH Zurich, philosophy at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and completed his doctoral dissertation on “Mythical Constructions” at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). He was a resident at YARAT Contemporary Art Space in Baku, the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, Villa Kamogawa (Goethe-Institut) in Kyoto and SACO (with Goethe-Institut and Institut Français) in Antofagasta. He is the recipient of the Hans Hollein Fellowship 2020 and the Rome Prize 2015 by the German Academy Villa Massimo.
